Contemporary, abstract, experimental artist externalising the internal

Sophie spent the bulk of her 20s and early 30s working in the television industry and made her first piece of art to explore feelings surrounding the industry she loved and hated in equal measure. Her experience in TV has informed the storytelling in her art and she enjoys making short form social media content about her art.

Sophie Woods is an experimental mixed media artist who discovered art at the age of 33, having never painted before. Once the floodgates opened she couldn’t stop. Sophie uses every kind of material imaginable in her quest to portray her inner world and process her emotions.

Everyone can be an artist with a bit of confidence and experimentation. We are born artists, some people just practice it. Sophie loves to encourage people to paint who say ‘I can’t do art’.

Much of Sophie’s art explores her childhood trauma and feelings of being ignored, misunderstood and hurt. Her art has been described by many people, artists and friends alike, as ‘honest’. Sophie expresses herself authentically and enjoys provoking reactions with her art. Art should not be safe or comfortable, in her view.
